This is Not the Time. Stand with Us in Disputing the Antidumping Petition Against Mattresses.

Join with the American Mattress Alliance in formally disputing the recent petition filed with the International Trade Commission against imported mattresses. The AMA emphatically denies any dumping and insists that their members operate within the confines of free and fair trade.

An estimated 12,000 jobs rely directly on the American businesses that import mattresses. A further 256,000 American retail jobs in the home furnishings and mattress industries would be negatively impacted should this move forward. As the country grapples with a devastated economy and a global pandemic, we stand together and proclaim that:

This is not the time.

By filling out the form, a letter will be submitted on your behalf to the petitioners, your elected government officials, and mattress manufacturers across the country.

Together we can make a difference and save American jobs.

Dear (Petitioners),

My name is (First) (Last), I live in (City), (State). It has come to my attention that a petition has been filed to impose duties on mattresses coming from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Serbia, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam. I write you today to strongly ask you to withdraw this petition.

COVID-19 has changed our world forever. More than 22 million Americans have applied for unemployment, and our everyday certainties have changed. I have seen reports of so many in your industry making PPE, donating beds, and shifting focus to help in any way they can, a heart-warming and wonderful expression of the view that we are all in this fight together.

The petition you submitted to the ITC ends the ability of global mattress manufacturers—who have the distribution channels, inventory, and means—to help. I understand that you are very involved in the fight against coronavirus. I applaud your efforts. But I don't think that you should be able to limit someone else's ability to help as well.

Additionally, this petition decreases the supply of mattresses available to U.S. consumers and stalls innovation. In an economy already devastated by COVID-19, this could close hundreds of businesses' doors and add tens of thousands of workers to the growing stream of unemployed Americans. Please don't needlessly take away American jobs—even if they are your competitors, they are still Americans.

I do not agree with the actions you have taken, and continue to take, to limit the supply of mattresses in the USA. I'm asking you now to reconsider your strategy and withdraw the petition.

Sincerely,

Dear (Manufacturers),

My name is (First) (Last), I live in (City), (State). It has come to my attention that a petition has been filed to impose duties on mattresses coming from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Serbia, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam. I write you today to implore you to contact petitioners and ask that they withdraw the petition.

COVID-19 has changed our world forever. More than 22 million Americans have applied for unemployment, and our everyday certainties have changed. Your industry has been essential, both in supplying mattresses to field hospitals and bringing comfort to people at home. I have seen reports of so many in your industry making PPE, donating beds, and shifting focus to help in any way they can, a heart-warming and wonderful expression of the view that we are all in this fight together.

However, companies like Leggett & Platt, FXI, Innocor, Corsicana, and others are trying to take advantage of this situation by limiting the mattresses that can be brought into the United States. The petition they submitted to the ITC during the pandemic ends the ability of global mattress manufacturers—who have the distribution channels, inventory, and means—to help.

Additionally, this petition decreases the supply of mattresses available to U.S. consumers and stalls innovation. In an economy already devastated by COVID-19, this could close hundreds of businesses' doors and add tens of thousands of workers to the growing stream of unemployed Americans.

We must reach out to the petitioners in this case, and those from previous cases to ensure they hear our voice. Please, help me tell the below companies that we do not agree with the actions they have taken, and continue to take, to limit the supply of mattresses in the USA.

  • Brooklyn Bedding
  • Corsicana Mattress Company
  • Elite Comfort Solutions
  • FXI Inc.
  • Innocor Inc.
  • Kolcraft Enterprises Inc.
  • Leggett & Platt Incorporated
  • International Brotherhood of Teamsters
  • United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union, AFL-CIO

I ask that you direct any further questions or response to the American Mattress Alliance at www.americanmattressalliance.org.

Dear (Congress Member),

My name is (First) (Last). I am a constituent from (City), (State) (Zip Code). I don't need a response. It has come to my attention that a petition has been filed to impose duties on mattresses coming from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Serbia, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam—Active Investigations 701-TA-645 and 731-TA-1495-1501. I write you today to communicate that I fundamentally disagree with this petition.

COVID-19 has changed our world forever. More than 22 million Americans have applied for unemployment, and our everyday certainties have changed. In many areas of the country field hospitals are being established and supplied in a matter of days. These operations need the essential supplies necessary to ensure their success. One of these critical supplies is mattresses. I have seen reports of thousands of mattresses being donated and supplied by companies across the U.S., a heart-warming and wonderful expression of the view that we are all in this fight together.

However, companies like Leggett & Platt, FXI, Innocor, Corsicana, and others are trying to take advantage of this situation by limiting the mattresses that can be brought into the United States. Additionally, this petition decreases the supply of mattresses available to U.S. consumers and stalls innovation. In an economy already devastated by COVID-19, this could close hundreds of businesses' doors and add tens of thousands of workers to the growing stream of unemployed Americans.

The Department of Justice recently issued a Statement of Interest to the International Trade Commission imploring them to reconsider the timing of this investigation. Let us extend the same message to the petitioners in this case, and those from previous cases, to ensure they hear our voice. Please, help me tell the below companies that we do not agree with the actions they have taken, and continue to take to limit the supply of mattresses in the USA. In addition, please tell the Department of Commerce you oppose this case and will be watching it closely.

Dear (Petitioners),

My name is (First) (Last), I operate (Store Name) in (City) (State). As part of my organization I operate (store number) critical retail location(s). If this petition is approved, it will indeed hurt the mattress industry in its entirety. I know my business will be hurt by the reduced availability of supply. If my business is hurt by it, so will yours. Retail has changed for me, and I need to be able to compete with every channel that a consumer might be in. If, at this critical juncture, these options are not available to me, I will be unable to compete, leaving me with no choices to be able to offer to my consumer.

I do not agree with the actions you have taken, and continue to take, to limit the supply of mattresses in the USA. I'm asking you now to reconsider your strategy and withdraw the petition. The mattress industry, and the world at large, is at a critical juncture. The supply and demand of materials, and consumer behaviors, have quickly shifted from the economic and nationwide impact of COVID-19. Our industry will likely be changed forever.

I have seen reports of so many in our industry making PPE, donating beds, and shifting focus to help during this crisis, a heart-warming and wonderful expression of the view that we are all in this fight together. However, companies like Leggett and Platt, FXI, Innocor, Corsicana, and others are trying to limit competition by choosing a time of crisis to restrict mattresses that can be brought into the United States.

The mattress industry has undoubtedly seen tremendous change in the last five years. One of the obvious changes is the introduction of rolled compressed mattresses. These products have been mission-critical during COVID-19 as a safe and consumer-acceptable method of delivering needed mattresses. Consumer's purchasing habits have changed during this crisis, and these mattresses in a box are one of the few ways retailers, like myself, have been able to continue generating income needed to support our staff.

If this petition is approved, it will damage our industry. I know my business will be hurt by the reduced availability of supply. Retail has changed for me, and I need to be able to compete with every channel that a consumer might be in. If, at this critical juncture, these options are not available to me, I will be unable to compete, leaving me with no options to offer my consumer.

I ask, for the livelihood of both of our businesses, please join me in opposing this petition.
